Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It was developed by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling at the University of Stockholm in 1812. It uses a firm but gentle pressure to soothe, relax and de-stress. Swedish massage is the foundation for other types of Western massage, including sports, deep tissue, therapeutic, remedial and aromatherapy.
Therapeutic massage uses similar techniques as Swedish massage but is targeted more on releasing muscle stiffness and tension than relaxation. A treatment commonly focuses on one specific part of the body such as the legs or back that are in need of a deep treatment rather than the whole body. For those who don’t play sports but perhaps work in an office environment, sitting in the same position for long periods, or carrying out repetitive tasks, therapeutic massage is ideal. It is extremely effective for loosening tight muscles and refreshing aching limbs.
Sports massage is for anyone who desires a deep massage that really works the muscles. It’s invaluable to athletes who need pre and post event work – either relaxing or invigorating the muscles in preparation for a competition, and then afterwards flushing them out – helping the sore muscles detoxify, realign and heal in preparation for the next bout of action. Remedial massage is a massage technique that provides a remedy to muscular dysfunction. It separates scar tissue and realigns muscle tissue, with an aim to restore the body to a pain free, balanced state. It uses such techniques as Soft Tissue Release (STR) Neuromuscular Technique (NMT), Muscle Energy Technique (MET) and Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy (MTPT). Sometimes Remedial massage can be a little uncomfortable, but only in a way that you will instinctively know is beneficial.
All of these massage treatments are drawn upon to provide you with the massage that YOU want. And if you’re not sure what you want? Don’t worry, you’re in experienced hands that will quickly get a feel of what is ‘right’. The whole process is all about YOU and what is right for YOU – so please don’t ever feel like you have to put up with pressure that is too heavy, or too light! © copyright 2007/2008 urbantaoist. all rights reserved. disclaimer
